stones with a memory

walls standing since 2000 years in Arles Amphitheatre

When I was in Bhutan I wrote in my blog about the still alive mythical consciousness I encountered there. I told about the old farmer in Chokar valley  ( blog page: home in Chokar Valley) who “remembered” and told us the many wonderous events that had taken place in this remote valley, many centuries ago and how the stones …kept the memory.

Last week end, together with my children and grandchildren we went to Arles, in the South of France, for the baptism of my nephew’s daughter Zoé.

It was a lovely event: joyfull, blessed and wonderfully organized and prepared, a wonderful opportunity to see family and friends and all this in the magical setting of Arles in autumn.

The baptism took place in the old church of St Trophime and I had to think of the temples in Bhutan…Everywhere people build places of prayer, places for the community to gather around the spirit.

Later we walked around the old town. The “Arènes” the old Amphitheatre of Arles was built in the first century and is still standing there so strong and impressive!

The Amphitheatre would probably still be allmost totally intact if the stones would not have been used to build Arles city. Most of the old houses in Arles are made of the stones collected from the arenas. But the building was done in such a way that it could last..."forever"..

It is still used today for corridas, concerts etc

So much history in these stones !!! Romans…gladiators…wars…middle age fortresses …bullfighting…so many stories to tell to my grandsons!

Yes the stones keep the memory and when opening up and listening to what they have to tell, treasures of human history, human consciousness appear to us...well for sure Ilya "saw" the roman gladiators fighting in the arena, Alexis "saw" the roman nobles in their wonderful robes and dresses attending the fights...

My son in law Igor said while walking on the wall of Arles Arena’s: what will be left to tell of our era, what buildings, stones, will be “remembered” will remember?

I wonder…so many things that seem so important today have become so "éphémère"so immaterial...internet...all these little machines...computers...etc are NOT made to last..right?..after 2-3 years they are outdated and ready to be thrown away ( what happens to a thrown away computer by the way?)

And what stones will remember......

May be they'll remember our mindful steps...our walking hand in hand...our laughter...our cries...I wonder
